Dear Brandon…. How do I become a Professional “Tweeter”?

Recently, the following question was posed to me.  A blog reader wanted to know how she would position herself to become a professional Twitter manager for companies and or individuals.

While I have not personally stepped out to monetize other company’s Twitter bases or personally tweet for others, my ideas would be that the perfect person for that job would be the following.  Here is what I advised her to do…

  • Show Results:  You need to be able to state that you grew a company or person’s twitter followers by x% in y months.
  • Show that the growth in followers led to a certain action that the company wanted, whether that was sales or lead generation or awareness
  • Understand and study the metrics and analytics of Social Media.  Be able to talk to a customer about the viral nature of followers and help them understand how RT lead to viral dissemination of messaging. Also understand a full lifecyle of the analytics attached to Social Media platforms all the way through to a desired Key Performance Indicator.
  • Become familiar with tools to help you automate your responses and followers for that person. These tools should concentrate on not only platform-specific Social Tools, but also comprehensive analytics packages that can measure kpi’s such as landing page traffic, form fills, downloads, and yes… CHING CHING Purcha$e$.

Then you need to come up with a package and pricing plan to deliver.  Your easiest clients will be those who are already tweeting but who don’t have a lot of followers OR those who do have a sizeable and loyal following, but have not monetized that yet.  In utopia, this role would be best profitable for you if you are an all around social consultant and NOT JUST the person who tweets.

What do you think of my advice to her?  What else would you add to the plate?
